Kenya is developing a National Electric Mobility Plan to combat pollution

The Kenyan government will implement the National Plan for the Development of Green Mobility as part of its National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy (2020-2025) to minimise air pollution in this East African country.

 
Kenyan authorities are developing the National Electric Mobility Plan in the absence of parliamentary approval of tax breaks for the importation of electric cars by 2024. It should enable the creation of a "clean and green transport system" through the adoption of a charter for automotive industry, environmental driver training, and the cooperation of the governments of the 47 countries in the sustainable management of road traffic.
 
"To strengthen the fight against global warming, the government has prioritised the adoption of e-mobility in the country. Against this backdrop, the government is committed to encouraging public service vehicles, boda boda, and commercial transporters to convert to electric vehicles," said Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen.
 
The Kenya National Electric Mobility Plan will supplement existing legislative measures that are already in place. These include the Climate Change Act of 2016 and the Energy Act of 2019 backed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The paper will advocate for the reduction of air pollution in key cities, including Nairobi, where many mobility start-ups have established factories since 2017.
 
This is the instance of Kenya's BasiGo, which is run by engineer Jit Bhattacharya. Since 2023, the startup has been collaborating with Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA) to construct 1,000 33-seat electric automobiles each unit by 2026. The collaboration, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions, will also create at least 300 green employment in manufacturing, charging, and vehicle maintenance.
