Isuzu East Africa intends to introduce an electric car in Kenya in 2025
Isuzu East Africa, a regional vehicle assembler, is preparing to enter Kenya’s electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its first battery-powered truck by the end of the year. The move is part of the company’s strategy to align with the country’s shifting transportation demands and the global shift toward sustainable mobility.
In an interview with Financial Afrik, Rita Kavashe, Chairperson of the Board and Managing Director of Isuzu East Africa, explained that concerns over battery life—particularly for commercial vehicles—had delayed the company’s entry into the EV space.
“Our first electric vehicle, a truck, will be introduced in Kenya in 2025 for customer testing, during which we’ll gather data and analyze market needs,” Ms. Kavashe noted.
She emphasized that battery limitations remain a major challenge. “Battery life is a key issue for us, especially with commercial vehicles. We don’t want our customers needing to return frequently just to recharge,” she said.
Globally, Isuzu Motors Limited—Isuzu’s parent company—is committed to rolling out low-emission vehicles. By 2030, it aims to offer battery-electric or hydrogen fuel cell options across its entire product lineup, with some models expected to enter mass production as early as 2026.
