Metro Trans East Africa Limited Acquires Five New Electric Buses

As part of its ambitious ambition to increase service delivery, Metro Trans East Africa Limited purchased five new fleets of electric buses.

The Sacco indicated in a statement that the new fleets will be stationed at the Ambassadeur stage in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD). They also offered free transportation from the CBD-designated stage to Utawala.

The electric buses were purchased in collaboration with the electric vehicle firm BasiGo as part of its commitment to promote the future of clean, electric public transit in the country.

"Welcome to this morning's major launch. MetroTrans EA Limited, in collaboration with BasiGo, will debut five electric vehicles at the Ambassador stage this morning and afterwards give free trips to Utawala. Don't miss out on this," the statement said in part.

BasiGo has previously stated that 15 electric buses will be provided to Nairobi Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators. The company stated that the move was part of President William Ruto's administration's efforts to reform the country's PSV sector.

Kipchumba Murkomen, the Transport CS, said that the government will give incentives for PSVs to purchase electric vehicles. He ascribed this to the 2019 Finance Act, which decreased the excise tax on electric vehicles from 20% to 10%.

"By creating a supportive environment for development and mainstreaming e-mobility through financial incentives for importers, producers, sellers, assemblers, and spare part dealers, the government will play a role in the transition to e-mobility," he CS added.

He continued by saying that in order to stop environmental deterioration, the government would also concentrate on finding ways to recycle the batteries used by EVs.

"We must get ready as a country to deal with batteries' end-of-life style as we push electric mobility so that they don't affect the environment. Finding ways to recycle batteries or find better ways to dispose of them will be essential," he noted.
