Hitachi and Roam collaborate to electrify African transportation

Roam, an electric car company, has joined up with Hitachi to extend electric mobility throughout Africa. Hitachi will leverage its experience in electric vehicles (EV) and fleet electrification to boost the number of electric motorbikes and e-buses in Kenya.

The partnership, made possible by The Earthshot Prize, will also allow for the exchange of worldwide expertise within the electric car sector via The Earthshot Prize's Fellowship Program.

The Roam Rapid, the company's first electric mass transit bus, has already been launched in Kenya. Roam's flagship electric motorbike, the Roam Air, has been tested on Kenyan roads.

"Since transportation accounts for around one-fifth of global emissions, Hitachi is working hard to create solutions to decarbonize the industry from road to rail." "Roam shares our aim of establishing a net-zero society, and we are thrilled to be assisting in making electric cars more accessible and cost-effective in Africa," stated Chris Saul, Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, Hitachi Europe Ltd, and Earthshot Prize Finalist Adviser for Roam.

"We are happy to have a solid partner in Hitachi. We are creating renewable energy technology to help our clients by intentionally engaging with industry pioneers that share our objective to alter the way we move around our globe," stated Albin Wilson, Roam's Chief Strategy and Product Officer.
