Treepz, a Nigerian vehicle rental firm, expands into Kenya

Treepz, a Nigeria-founded mobility firm, moved into Kenya as part of its pan-African growth, commencing with Nairobi and subsequently Mombasa, almost a year after making its initial East African expansion via Uganda.

In contrast to past expansions, the firm, which is now present in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and Kenya, did not announce an acquisition.

Treepz debuted in Nigeria as Plentywaka in 2019. Onyeka Akumah (CEO), Johnny Enagwolor (Managing Director), Oluseyi Afolabi (VP of Product Development), and John Shaibu (VP of Customer Engagement) are its co-founders.

Plentywaka announced a name change to Treepz Inc. in September 2021 to reflect its desire for global and pan-African development. "We changed the name of Plentywaka to Treepz (pronounced Trips) after learning that the term "WAKA" might represent numerous things throughout Africa that may be entirely unrelated to travel or mobility," Onyeka explained.

The ride-hailing startup offers a car rental service on its marketplace that links vehicle owners with renters, as well as a corporate offering for businesses and schools that provides commuting services for their employees or students. Treepz engaged Samar Patel, former Swvl Head of Transport-as-a-Service and Software-as-a-Service, to oversee its operations in Kenya.

"The addition of Samar to our team and the opening of Treepz Kenya in Nairobi today have us ecstatic. This was made possible by the support we received from our existing investors in the midst of a difficult 2022. Additionally, after receiving the GSA African Award in Cape Town last year, we got funds from its financial arm, the GIIG Africa Fund, which came at an opportune moment," Onyeka Akumah, Treepz's co-founder and CEO, stated in a statement.

Treepz has recently focused on automobile rental services, or what the firm refers to as Business Treepz. Treepz Kenya has also signed up a handful of high-profile firms to provide commuting services for their employees or students as a result of this move. These enterprises include well-known names like Twiga Foods, Abacus Schools, OAK House School, and Diamond Trust Bank, with 20 major transactions in the works across Kenya.

These collaborations show the rising demand for Treepz's unique solutions, particularly car rental services for companies, and the firm is sure that this trend will continue as it expands its reach.

"Patel, who most recently held a similar position with SWVL Kenya, brings to the job 18 years of extensive sales, transportation, and technological expertise. Treepz Kenya is anticipated to continue to expand and innovate in the area under his guidance," according to the company's statement.
